This week we dive into parenting again, and we look at how we can raise strong, independent, and well-rounded daughters. Jaidyn the "Iron Maiden" and her father David Mueller provide a candid look into how their family manages an incredibly busy life while still achieving their goals, having fun, and spending time as a family.

David shares his story of achieving a vastly healthier and more energetic lifestyle after he had a stroke that forced him to clean up his, and his family's, diet. He and Jaidyn discuss how the change in diet affected family dynamics and the benefits they've seen in their focus and performance, including being able to train together in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Jaidyn and David also delve into how they manage Jaidyn's training while David and his wife manage a full-time business. Part of their lifestyle includes Jaidyn having been on an unconventional education plan since middle school. Hearing how Jaidyn and her parents have managed to maintain education as a high priority while Jaidyn is also in a full fight training schedule shows the benefit of using education technology creatively to fit one's lifestyle.

Despite their busy and intensely goal-focused lives, they manage to create time for fun, hobbies, and each other by ensuring that they achieve the true priorities first and knowing what can be sacrificed from their day, including the various social media outlets.

Today we speak with Larry Hagner, founder of the Good Dad Project and author of the best-selling book The Dad's Edge. Larry grew up in an abusive environment and struggled through a series of traumas as a kid. As an adult he found himself repeating some of the same mistakes with his own children. It was recognizing this destructive pattern that prompted him to make a change. He started treating self development as his top objective so that he could be the best possible father to his kids.

Over the last several years, Larry has been working with fathers from around the world to help them become better dads for their own families. Larry also hosts a top-rated podcast, The Good Dad Project, that brings weekly advice to fathers on how to improve themselves and their performance.

In this episode, Larry shares his perspective on the characteristics and specific behaviors that help him and other fathers be truly present and supportive for their families. Over the past two years, I've found his humble and genuine manner and down-to-earth advice incredibly helpful. If you find yourself constantly having stress at home, whether it's because of your job, combat stress, or any other reason, then this episode will help you get your headspace right so that you can really be there for your family. Larry also delves into how he persevered through the tragedy of losing his son and the mindset that helped keep his family together.

Today's show dives into the lessons learned from Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth.  In her late twenties, Angela left a demanding job as a management consultant to teach math to seventh graders in the New York City public schools. Several years in the classroom taught her that effort was tremendously important to success. To begin to solve the mystery of why some people work so much harder and longer than others, Angela entered the PhD program in psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is now a professor. She is also a 2013 MacArthur fellow and founder and scientific director of the Character Lab.

Join me as we discuss why grit is vital for achievement, how we establish and maintain the habits that allow us to achieve our goals across a lifetime. We'll also talk about how to avoid sabotaging yourself with self-criticism and judgments. Lastly, we'll analyze how passion and other-centric purpose fuels the fire for long-term achievement.
